Open letter by the All-National Social-Democratic Party “AZAT” leaders to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev
Mister President, As you know, Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan (the lower chamber) approved a legislative initiative of the MPs, members of the “Nur Otan” party. It gives you a status of “the national leader” introducing additional guarantees and authorities for you. We are convinced that it is a very dangerous idea, which contradicts to the letter and spirit of the Constitution, the fundamental principle of equality of the citizens in the face of the law. Such foolish initiative of MPs devalues the concept of law-based democratic state and creates a legal controversy that could adversely affect the functioning of the political system. Finally, such unprecedented law takes Kazakhstan out from the ranks of civilized states, making our chairmanship in the OSCE no more than an oddity. The Constitution and the law “On the first President” give you sufficient authority for the most effective implementation of your activity and all necessary legal safeguards. The “leader of the nation” concept is an exclusively moral and ethical category, the result of informal selection of the people. It cannot be legitimized in any form. World politicians, who remained in history as leaders, received this title, first of all, due to unselfish service to their people, not requiring any additional titles or regalia. We urge you to stop this flow of flattery and bootlicking from your entourage, which discredits you and Kazakhstan on the whole. We urge you to show political wisdom and civic responsibility and to veto the law on the leader of the nation!
Co-chairmen of the All-National Social-Democratic Party “AZAT” Bulat Abilov Zharmakhan Tuyakbai
